The sculpture was inspired by a small owl that became a nightly visitor to the bird feeder, The artist aggressively researched the behavior and character of this bird to insure the detail represents the beauty and cute character of this rarely seen owl.
Bird watchers are especially challenged by the elusiveness of this little owl. Strictly nocturnal. roosting in thick cover during day light hours and living in northern boreal forests, sighting one of these little owls is quite an accomplishment. The owl’s call is heard only in breeding season, is a shore series of rapid, hollow hoo notes.
The owl is life size, measuring seven inches long from head to the tip of the tail. This piece is comprised of the owl perched on the top of a separately sculpted spruce stump. The base of the sculpture is made from Cherry burl harvested Vermont. The paint used on this sculpture is acrylic that has been sealed with a protective flat lacquer. The compact size of this little bird provides a lot of options for decorating any bird lovers home.
